Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill

Updated: Jun 13, 2020

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Ernest Shackleton’s journey across the Antarctic, in 2014, illustrator William Grill created Shackleton’s Journey, an enviably beautiful non-fiction book for children, which retells Shackleton’s story through informative text and gorgeously layered colour-pencil drawings.

There’s a lot to admire about this book, not least because Grill, who won the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2015, was still in his early twenties when he created it. Frozen panoramas and detailed diagrams of the Endurance aside, this drawing of Shackleton’s sled dogs and their unusual names has always stood out for me as one of the book’s many highlights.
